Burning

Jun Jong-Seo’s, Haemi, is the real star of Chang-Dong Lee’s Burning. Her naiveté and allure ground the first half of the film with one of the most beautifully cinematic dancing sequences in any slow-paced drama. Based off of Haruki Murakami’s “Barn Burning,” the film is an unexpected psychological thriller. The Korean film is marketed as a drama with The Walking Dead’s Steven Yuen as a charismatic pyromaniac and Yoo Ah-in as the main character Jongsu. The film follows Jongsu as he reunites with Haemi, who used to live in the same village and attend the same school, just days before she leaves on a solo trip to Africa. When she finally comes back she brings back Yuen’s Ben, whose American name, sports car and charming good looks threaten the humble Jongsu. The film is a shocking and subtle metaphor which ultimately culminates into one of the best films at Cannes.
