Day 10: "Let's Go to The Other Side"



I’ve come to realize that Eric Kohn is 20 minutes late for everything. I went to his live podcast in the American Pavilion today and I took a lot of notes. However, I only care to speak to his comment that Girls of The Sun was "over-sentimental." Girls of the Sun details a group of badass warrior women who fight for themselves, their country and their "children's children." It's heartbreaking, they lose their entire families and are sold as sex slaves. More importantly, these are real events effecting Kurdish women and other women in the world at this very moment. So, it had every right to be over-sentimental and it was one of the best films I have ever seen. The war genre is usually reserved for western men so it was a refreshing change of pace. 


Anyways, I woke up so late that I had to actually run to the train station in order to make the showing of Shoplifters. The film was so amazing and complex and shocking and long! Then I saw Kohn's talk. Immediately after his talk I went to watch Burning, which was also a shocker. Steven Yuen's character was amazing and it was so interesting but also 148 minutes long. Then I finally got to watch Cold War which was beautiful and another secret musical!  Overall today was packed with long back to back movies and at one point a New Orleans man educated me on astrology.

Day 9

Day 9 Last night we lost Darius. He gave me his phone to help him and it died in my arms. Was I the last one to see him with his phone? Yes, he walked off and we tried to find him for hours. We all thought that he died. It turns he is alive! We begged for solo tickets in the morning and we got tickets almost immediately. The movie was mediocre and made me incredibly nauseous.  Then I stood in line for Cold War for a while but didn't get in so we went to see Sofia. Advice for next year

Quick Cannes advice: See as many movies as you can and sleep as little as humanly possible Don't be afraid to ask questions or to speak the people around you Don't worry too much about clothing for the festival! Some people are dressed very casually and others business professional. That being said, the weather is unpredictable and you will need a wide variety of attire and a rain jacket for sure.  Make your travel weekend plans in advance! And take the train to nearby cities every chance you can get.  Always have your train ticket on you. They hardly ever check, but you don't wanna pay 50 euro.  The train is almost always late and sometimes doesn't come at all. Have Uber on your phone already as the wifi here is also crazy unpredictable.   Everyone is homesick and in an entirely new environment, you're not alone.   When you bring cash over don't have any 100s- most places don't accept them Be prepared to spend so much ti...

Review 1: Rafiki

Rafiki (2018) Review by Samantha Krupica Overall, Rafiki was one of the most vibrant films I have ever seen. Wanuri Kahiu’s picture was, in my opinion, the best film screened at Cannes thus far. The cinematography, narrative arc and acting styles were all beyond amazing. Kena and Ziki only want “something real” and to break away from their small town Kenyan lives. This longing for a better life, happiness and safety with each other grounds the seemingly niche film within the universal collective. The film follows a pair of young star-crossed lovers in the midst of their town mayoral election. Ziki and Kena’s fathers are competing for the mayor position and the two are not meant to speak to each other.
